People keep looking at me like I'm crazy every time I bring this up and I'm sick of it; there is no way the Songbirds are an ethical industry. They're literally kept asleep IN TANKS when they're not performing, their diets are strictly controlled, and no one has ever seen them in public. They're not even human off the stage. Plus, I've never heard of a former Songbird. Where do they go after their careers are done?

NO I GET IT!! Apparently they were designed after old-timey pop idols, but cranked up to eleven. It's so weird how the Songbirds are paraded around, and so many of them were hired right after they became adults.
Not to mention the facility that went down. Where the hell did they put the performers?

Last I heard, they were moved to a different company.

We weren't.
At least, not right away.
The facility didn't "go down." The devices used to shut down the performers stopped working one evening, and we didn't know how long it would be until someone came to find us. One of the many things they don't tell you when you sign the paperwork is that part of being a songbird is learning how to be helpless.
We argued a bit. Some of us separated from the rest of the group and tried to pass the time. It didn't keep us calm for long. I think that less than a day had passed when the first fight broke out. We're not very strong, but we were athletic enough to dance, so a fair amount of damage was done. After three days someone came by to collect us. I hid from the people wearing masks, and I was picked up by a carrier ship a day later.
I'm technically on the run, but I believe they stopped looking for me years ago. I was only twenty three. I turned thirty last week. I don't know what would have happened to me if I was still with them. There are no old Songbirds. There are no flawed Songbirds. There are no free Songbirds. We didn't even write our own music. The machines did, and we only repeated the words we were given.
I don't know where my friends are. I've been looking for years.

There's no way. I mean, the government wouldn't do that, would they?
