If Hyacinthe knew that I was asking ridiculous questions like this, I don't know what she'd do. But it doesn't matter. I need to know if anyone gets that feeling. The new Spaceway solar mirror is pointing at us, not away from us. What is the purpose? It's not reflecting the sun towards us or away from us, it's just... sitting there. What is watching us? Is it the same being that brought humans to Minthe?
Scientists found out that birds sing to themselves when they're alone. I like that thought. They are alive, after all, just like we are. When I was a very small boy I was on an aircraft that moved a bit too close to a black hole, and I was left completely by myself while the adults brought us home safely. After a few minutes, I heard the song coming from outside. There was nothing to see out there, just the deep darkness of the void. The voice was distorted, breaking into different ranges but undeniably coming from the same source. Beautiful isn't the right word to describe it. I felt so unbelievably small in that moment, and I put one hand against the wall. And all at once, the music stopped.
I didn't believe in a God until recently, when I heard that singing again. It's been following me to my office in the Transportation Safety Center, it has followed me on the train to work, and sometimes when I try to talk to my coworkers it is deafening. It's rarely the same song. Sometimes it's desperate. Other times, it is somewhat calm. It doesn't matter. Something is out there, and I think it might be Out There. It's not a place. It's a life.
I don't know what it wants. I just want to go back to work.
